(5 Jul 2016) It's the first time that Syrian refugee Moustafa Shikh Habib is celebrating the Islamic holiday of Eid al-Fitr - the end of the fasting month of Ramadan - in Germany and he has bittersweet feelings about it. The 36-year-old Kurd said Tuesday at his new home in Berlin that he finds it difficult to be away from his larger family. He, his wife and four children now share two cramped rooms in a huge asylum centre in the German capital. "But at least we're fine here - Allah be praised." More than one-million asylum seekers came to Germany last year alone, the majority of them from Muslim countries like Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan. Celebrating the end of Ramadan in migrant shelters across the country can be challenging, since they can't prepare their own festive food and don't have enough money to buy new clothes for their children or candies to treat them, as they traditionally would in their home countries on Eid al-Fitr. Even with uncertain futures ahead of them and only humble celebrations in their newly-adopted country, most prefer their current situation over their old lives back home. Moustafa Shikh Habib and his family fled the civil war in Syria, spent two years in northern Iraq and eventually came to Germany ten months ago. They're originally from the Syrian city of Raqqa, which is under the brutal control of the extremist Islamic State group (IS). The family decided to flee after Moustafa's father was killed in a bomb attack and their 12-year-old son Mohammed was injured badly on his right leg in another bombing. They're still waiting for their asylum interview and there's little hope they'll be able to move into an apartment of their own anytime soon. Still, the family is grateful that the children are already in school and learning German. Their mother Susan Sheikha dreams of working as a hairdresser again, as she did in Syria. Syrian refugee Ahmad Shabu, 38, came to Berlin two months ago after his asylum plea was rejected in Sweden. Together with his wife, five children and dozens of other Syrians, he marked the end of Ramadan with a prayer service at a mosque in Berlin's Arab immigrant neighbourhood of Neukoelln. After the prayer, the family mingled with hundreds of mostly Lebanese and Palestinian immigrants in front of the mosque, enjoying special foods, music and games for the children. Shabu, who used to work as a patissier in his hometown of Aleppo before the war, is content being safe in Germany now, but does not see his future there. "I am doing this for my children", he said. Casa Árabe hosted a round table on the role of artists and cultural producers from the Arab world with regards to the current affairs affecting the region. With the participation of Zineb Sedira, artist and founder of ARIA (Artist Residency in Algiers); Ammer Abo Bakr, street artist; Rachida Triki, art critic, curator and Professor specialized in Aesthetics and Philosophy of Art; and Nuria Medina, coordinator of Culture at Casa Árabe. This round table frocused on the role of artists and cultural producers from the Arab world with regards to the current affairs and uncertainties that are affecting the region. We tryed to seek answers to questions such as: where do we stand today, after five years of Arab uprising?; what are the most important issues affecting cultural institutions and artists across the region?; which are the perspectives for the youth, and among them, many artists? Although obstacles, extremism and censorship are increasing and affecting many critical intellectuals and artists in some countries, are there signals of a cultural revolution happening behind the headlines? In this regard, how determinant is being the technological change and global connection? In this context of change and instability, how artists and cultural producers deal with the tradition and memory of their cultures? A recent flight of emergency relief supplies for Palestinians in the Gaza Strip carried not just hygiene kits and other supplies from Dubai to Jordan, but also a special passenger: UNRWA goodwill ambassador Mohammed Assaf, Arab Idol winner and popular singer from Gaza’s Khan Younis camp, where several families have been wiped out in the continuing violence. Upon landing in Jordan, he made an emotional plea for the people of Gaza. "There is pain in my heart from what is happening in my town and to my people in my beloved home, Gaza . No words can describe what I feel, how the Arab world feels, how the world feels. Now we all have to help my beloved people in Gaza, all those who suffer in Gaza, all those who suffer under the attacks. My thanks to all, everywhere: We have to help Gaza stand up on its feet one more time. Gaza is strong. Gazans are heroes. They always get back on their feet after they have been destroyed. That is the Gaza I trust. The number of people who have been killed is so immense, civilians, children, women, elderly. It is a very bad situation." The pitiless violence unleashed since hostilities escalated on 7 July continues to devastate the people of Gaza. Large swaths of neighbourhoods east of Gaza City are reduced to rubble. The eastern and northern areas of Gaza are virtually empty of civilians and have turned into combat zones. By the time of the Eid al-Fitr holiday in July 2014, the number of Palestinians taking refuge in UNRWA shelters had more than tripled the peak tally from the 2008/9 conflict, with 85 facilities housing 200,337 internally displaced people – more than 10 per cent of the entire population of Gaza. UNRWA staff continue their work to support the people in the shelters, providing the displaced with food, water, mattresses and hygiene kits, even as Agency staff and facilities remain vulnerable. Five UNRWA staff have been killed in the conflict, and an attack on a school designated as an emergency shelter killed 15 people. UNRWA is also overseeing the delivery of emergency relief supplies. The International Humanitarian City in Dubai is coordinating airlifts of aid with several organizations. To date, 18 aircraft have arrived in Jordan with desperately needed relief supplies: 5 Cargo 747 jets, 12 transport aircraft and an airbus from the Bahrain Royal Charity Organization. The relief flights have delivered 126,500 blankets, 98,000 sleeping mats, 15,000 family food packages and more than 120 million tons of medicine. From Jordan, the supplies are carried by truck to Gaza, where UNRWA is distributing urgently needed items to thousands of vulnerable displaced families. While several convoys have been able to reach Gaza, the intense need for food, medical supplies and other emergency equipment is only increasing. You may be rich, but are you Humaid Albuqaish rich? See his cars, and his great cats. Let me introduce you to Humaid Albuqaish, a resident of Dubai. Humaid has an interesting collection of exotic animals, including lions, cheetahs, turtles and more. Not only does he have a nice collection, but what he does with them is insane. I doubt he's a circus trainer, but he has at least learned how to keep his exotic pets tame. They let him do the craziest stuff, just check out the pictures, or the short video below. Humaid Al Buqaish lives in a massive compound somewhere outside of Dubai. His Instagram account is dedicated to his many pets, most of which are exotic cats. It seems like someone in his very wealthy entourage got their hands on a GoPro camera, and the combination of his comical levels of wealth and his several tigers, cheetahs, lions, and one painfully cute chimp that he dresses in all Paul Frank pajamas has resulted in a mass YouTube following. Different cultures treat wealth differently. In the west, many families have had wealth for countless generations, leading to an almost apathy towards their wealth. Sure, they have plenty of money, but they see no need to flaunt it. Arab states, on the other hand, have a very different outlook. Many of the todays Arab elite remember being dirt poor, so their take on money is quite different. They flaunt it in ways that boggles the mind at times, writing their name in the sand, buyng a pure white gold Mercedes or countless other ridiculous shows. One thing that virtually all Arab elite do is show off their cars. This has become so common place that the elite are looking for other ways of showing off, and exotic pets are the new thing. With lions going for $50,000 a piece, few ordinary folk can afford it, making them all the more interesting for those looking to flaunt. Arab states, on the other hand, have a very different outlook. With lions going for $50,000 a piece, few ordinary folk can afford it, making them all the more interesting for those looking to flaunt. Let me introduce you to Humaid Albuqaish, a resident of Dubai (presumably). Dubai has an area of over 4,000 square kilometers, and is part of the United Arab Emirates. Dubai is an economic and financial center, where the jewelry trade is important. Dubai formerly depended on oil and natural gas, but currently have diversified their economy. Tourism, real estate and trade is the main source of income. Like any Arab country, Dubai meets the religious requirements of Islam. It is called to prayer five times a day and all citizens begin to pray toward Mecca. Since 1990 Dubai has grown rapidly, and now is the envy of the world. For mega-wealthy young men of the Gulf Arab states nothing says 'I am rich' more aptly than to Instagram yourself and your lion or cheetah posing alongside your Mercedes or Lamborghini or motoring along in a speedboat. Showing off the Persian Gulf's latest 'ultimate status symbol', the penchant for posting big cat photos on Instagram betrays the young men's sheer bravado or stupidity, depending on your point of view. Indeed, while the intimacy on display the owners seem to share with their cats is clearly touching, others could possibly think of better ways to flaunt their wealth than sharing feeding time or bathing with fully grown 400 pound lions. Among the animals taken into custody are white lions, tigers, panthers, cheetahs and hyenas.
